APPLEDORE to WESTWARD HO! Stage 11 (16th August 2007)

We caught the #2 bus from Barnstaple to Appledore Quay. From here the SWCP path follows a narrow road lined with pretty cottages before briefly taking to the beach, then along low cliffs. It was high tide so we had to take the higher route. After a short stretch along a B-road there is a right turn towards Northam Burrows Country Park. This leads out onto the Burrows, a very varied dune system with excellent 360 degree views of the two estuaries, Appledore, Braunton Burrows, Lundy and Hartland Point. We saw a (suspected) wheatear. After the golf course and a comfort stop at the information centre we arrived in Westward Ho! at about 12.45. Excellent cream tea at the Tea on the Green café then we caught the #1 bus back to Barnstaplewhere we were staying overnight.
Total time (including stops) around 4.0 hours. Distance walked 11km Ascent 149m.

The South West Coast Path is the longest of the official English National Trails, running from Minehead in Somerset round the English south west peninsula coast to Poole in Dorset. The total length is just over 1000 kilometres or, more precisely, 630 miles. Only very dedicated walkers could contemplate completing the whole walk in one go, although plenty of people have done just this. Received opinion is that it would take around 6 weeks, even for the most dedicated.
