HUNTER’S INN to COMBE MARTIN Stage 5 (27th April 2007)
We took a taxi from Lynton Town Hall at 9am to Hunter's Inn. This allowed an early start from there at 9.30, towards Combe Martin. We walked up the right hand river bank to the Heddon's Mouth bridge then crossed over and followed the Coast Path to the left before climbing steeply up the valley side (there are some steps here). Then we followed the track high up, along the valley side to Peter’s Rock (take care in strong or gusty winds), turning then to follow the coast while climbing higher. Then an open walk follows, alongside a stone-faced bank, with excellent coastal headland views. The path next turns inland through gorse and heather moorland up the Sherrycombe valley. We stopped here for a cake break (had to bring our own cake...). The path plunges down and then up the other side, to cross a stream. After a very steep and stony section the path meets a field wall on the left and the gradient becomes much less severe for a gentle walk up to the peak of Great Hangman where there is a cairn and marker post. Another gentle descent towards Little Hangman with views of Combe Martin appearing in the valley. The path goes to the south of Little Hangman before returning to the coast for a steady descent between hedges into Combe Martin itself, where we arrived at 13.30. After lunch in the Foc’sle Inn we took Andy’s Taxi back to Lynton Town Hall.
Total time (including stops) around 4.2 hours. Length of walk: 12.0km Ascent on walk 2401 feet (=765m total).
The South West Coast Path is the longest of the official English National Trails, running from Minehead in Somerset round the English south west peninsula coast to Poole in Dorset. The total length is just over 1000 kilometres or, more precisely, 630 miles. Only very dedicated walkers could contemplate completing the whole walk in one go, although plenty of people have done just this. Received opinion is that it would take around 6 weeks, even for the most dedicated.
